Blue Gum Isn't What You Think.
When most people hear the word eucalyptus, they usually picture one scent.
That sharp, almost medicinal smell we've all come to know from cleaning products or chest rubs. It's become so familiar that we often assume every eucalyptus smells exactly the same.
But did you know there are over 700 species of eucalyptus?
One of my favourites is Tasmanian Blue Gum (Eucalyptus globulus), and to me, it's one of Tasmania's best-kept secrets.
If you've ever wandered through the Tasmanian bush in late spring or summer, you've probably walked beneath its towering trees without even realising. With its peeling blue-grey bark and creamy yellow flowers, it's one of the state's most iconic native trees. Those flowers are also a favourite of bees, producing the beautiful Blue Gum honey that Tasmania is so well known for.
What I love most, though, is its scent.
Unlike the strong eucalyptus most people expect, Tasmanian Blue Gum is much softer. It still carries that fresh, cooling menthol note, but it's followed by a gentle sweetness and a warm woody finish. It's fresh without being overpowering, making it feel unmistakably Tasmanian.
It's the scent of walking through native bushland after rain, breathing in cool morning air, and feeling completely refreshed.
That softer character is what makes it such a beautiful essential oil to blend with. It pairs effortlessly with calming Tasmanian lavender, grounding cedarwood, and—my personal favourite—a touch of sweet orange, which lifts the blend and brings out Blue Gum's naturally sweet side.
At Salt Folk, we don't use Blue Gum because it's expected.
We use it because it tells the story of Tasmania.
Our scents are inspired by the places we live, the landscapes we walk through, and the native botanicals that make this island so unique. Every blend is designed to feel balanced, layered, and quietly beautiful, bringing a little of Tasmania into your home.
Sometimes the most familiar ingredients have the most unexpected stories to tell.
